An algae bloom is a rapid increase in algae population in a water body, driven by the intersection of available nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), sunlight, and temperature. Blooms drive treatment cost, taste and odor complaints, and (for toxin-producing species) acute water quality risk. Floating covers prevent algae blooms at the source by blocking the sunlight required for photosynthesis — 95%+ suppression with no chemicals and no operating cost.
