The EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) is Directive 91/271/EEC, recast in 2024, establishing collection and treatment standards for urban wastewater discharged to surface waters. For wastewater operators, floating covers support compliance by reducing odor and emissions at treatment ponds, and by reducing algae and biofilm precursors in storage and equalisation.
